This northern abstract is an homage to Galileo. Although considered apocryphal, Galileo is rumoured to have muttered “E pur si muove!” (And still, it moves!) before the ecclesiastical court that forced him to recant his heliocentric view of the universe and placed him into house arrest. This view is informed by our modern understanding of our place in the grand scheme of things, and faces north to the fixed pole as the sky appears to rotate around us.

A soft, dream-like image of an early morning in Algonquin Park. In the mist, on the still water, looking east waiting for the sun to rise. This painting captures the experience of being between white emptiness and within a defined landscape as mist lifts in the dawn.

Huron at the Pinery

Afternoon on the shore of Lake Huron at the Pinery. Dreamlike, the horizon is tobacco stained with the emissions from Chemical Valley to the southwest. The eastern shore of Lake Huron has a sandy bottom that is churned up by the waves in the summer breeze, and the silt and algae stain the water green. Offshore, where the water deepens sharply, the lake is a shadowy blue.

Northern lights
