The grass in this painting is a negative texture created solely using a palette knife, in contrast to earlier approaches which used a combination of extrusion and knife-work. The aim was to explore a stronger use of deep perspective and a greater amount of visual detail than previous grass landscapes.

grass, detail, by nik harron, 2001

This piece is the third painting from the original series of four landscapes that I did for the Carpe Vinum show in 2001.

It moves beyond the sturm and drang of the first two to represent a deeply individual experience of lying back in tall, fragrant grass on the edge of sleep at sunset on a warm summer’s evening- a direct, individual experience of nature.

Lying in tall grass like this was a favourite escape during my childhood.
