This northern abstract is an homage to Galileo. Although considered apocryphal, Galileo is rumoured to have muttered “E pur si muove!” (And still, it moves!) before the ecclesiastical court that forced him to recant his heliocentric view of the universe and placed him into house arrest. This view is informed by our modern understanding of our place in the grand scheme of things, and faces north to the fixed pole as the sky appears to rotate around us.

I’m often asked by people who have seen the early stages of one of my paintings why I don’t ever exhibit works at the texture stage and forgo the glazing stage that brings colour to the paintings. This piece is probably about as close to that as I’ll get in the near future.

Evoking late afternoon rain in the country, lifting to reveal the surprising light still clinging to the sky in the west.

Fading light Lake Huron

The sunsets of Lake Huron are fabled to be the prettiest in the world. Long after the sun has gone, however, just before the darkness falls the sky takes on a calm glow stained pink and orange at the horizon by the last colour of the fading day.
