We live at the bottom of a gravity well—a distortion in space to which things naturally fall down. We can, however, look out on the universe up towards the stars. Here we are pictured looking up to the fixed point of the north star that marks the axis of our Earth’s rotation and which points points further up out of the galactic plane. Larger image.
