For now, gravity, although the weakest of the four fundamental forces, rules the universe. It keeps us imprisoned on the surface of our world and traps our earth within the prison of the solar system. Recently, however, observations have shown that gravity is no match for dark energy, a mysterious force which is accelerating the expansion of the universe and which will eventually—in deep time—tear even atoms apart. Larger image.
